I have worked on a variety of projects ranging from traditional and experimental 2D and 3D animation; as well as 3D scanning of both small objects, buildings and landscapes. I am also working on projects involving Virtual Reality game development focused around preserving cultural and historical sites.
I have primarily conducted research on the Hampden-Sydney college campus as well as through the Hampden-Sydney college undergraduate research program. I am also involved with the Nunalleq project in Quinhagak, Alaska. I have also worked alongside political advocacy groups on Capitol Hill such as the Council on Undergraduate Research.
I am Andrew Winans, an digital artist and developer from Tampa Florida. I attended Hampden-Sydney College for my undergraduate degree. I also received multiple awards for my research and artwork and animations while a student there. I am now attempting to create my own path by developing Virtual Reality based solutions grounded in real life environments and experiences.
I am focused on using technologies such as image scanning and Gaussian splats in order to preserve cultural and historical sites in 3D. These sites include museums, archeological sites, along with historical buildings and cultural landmarks.
I also work to provide game-like experiences focused on realism and education. With the photo scans I create, I can recreate the site through traditional 3D modeling methods in order to allow users the ability to walk around and interact with the site and its treasures.
Using this technology to open accessibility to sites such as hiking trails is another area of focus for me. Using Gaussian Splats, I am able to record hiking trails in 3D, allowing users the ability to walkthrough the trail unabridged. This can potentially allow people with physical disabilities the ability to experience and interact safely with these beautiful areas.
